DIN 7981 Pozi Pan Self-Tapping Screws (Type AB)
We supply DIN 7981 pozi pan self-tapping screws with the Type AB spaced thread and sharp point, in steel zinc plated and A2 and A4 stainless steel, from gauge 2 (2.2mm) to gauge 14 (6.3mm). The pan head with pozi recess is the general-purpose self-tapper pattern for fixing into sheet metal and pre-punched holes.
Also known as: pozi pan self tapper, pan head self tapping screw, type ab self tapper, AB self tapping screw, sheet metal screw, din7981, DIN 7981 C.

Materials & strength
Type AB thread and point
Spaced self-tapping thread with a sharp point that forms its own thread in sheet metal, plastics and pre-punched holes.
Steel zinc plated
Zinc plated (BZP) finish as standard - the general-purpose choice for dry indoor and sheltered fixings.
Stainless steel A2
Good general corrosion resistance for indoor and external use.
Stainless steel A4
Molybdenum-bearing grade with better resistance to salt and chloride exposure than A2.
Related specificationsWhat does Type AB mean on a self-tapping screw?
Type AB describes the thread and point form: a spaced self-tapping thread with a sharp gimlet point. In the DIN system this point form is marked C, so these screws are often listed as DIN 7981 C. They form their own thread as they are driven into a pre-drilled pilot hole in sheet metal - the screw forms the thread, not the hole.
What is the difference between Type AB and Type B?
Both share the same spaced thread; Type AB has a sharp point while Type B has a blunt end (DIN point form F). We list DIN 7981 Type B pozi pan screws as a separate specification.
How do the gauge sizes convert to metric diameters?
The gauges in the dimension table correspond to these diameters: 2g = 2.2mm, 4g = 2.9mm, 6g = 3.5mm, 7g = 3.9mm, 8g = 4.2mm, 10g = 4.8mm, 12g = 5.5mm and 14g = 6.3mm.
Which material should I choose?
Steel zinc plated suits dry indoor fixings; A2 stainless adds corrosion resistance for general external work. A4 offers better resistance to salt and chloride exposure than A2. Send us your requirement if you are unsure which grade suits the application.
Is there an ISO equivalent to DIN 7981?
ISO 7049 covers cross-recessed pan head tapping screws and is closely aligned dimensionally. Where a drawing calls up one standard specifically, match that standard.
