Drop Nose Pins
Drop nose pins are quick-release retaining pins with a pivoting nose plate at the tip: swing the plate in line with the body to fit or withdraw the pin, then rotate it a quarter turn and it snaps across to lock the pin in place. Produced in 316 stainless steel, they are available in regularly produced sizes from 6mm to 12mm diameter and 20mm to 120mm long, with other sizes made against requirement.
Also known as: drop nose pin, swing latch pin, quick release pin, flip latch pin, stainless quick release pin.
Materials & strength
Locks open and closed
The sprung nose plate snaps positively into both the in-line and the crossed positions, so the pin cannot creep between fitted and released states in service.
Built for frequent use
A large finger grip at the head end makes repeated fitting and removal comfortable without tools - the pattern suits guards, gates and fixtures that are opened daily.
316 stainless steel
The marine-grade material handles washdown, coastal and chemical environments, which is where a robust quick-release pin most often earns its keep.
Lanyard option
An alternative head form is grooved to accept a lanyard, keeping the pin captive to the equipment.
Related specificationsHow does a drop nose pin work?
With the nose plate swung in line, the pin passes through the assembly like a plain pin. Rotating the plate a quarter turn drops it across the pin axis, where it snaps into a locked position and acts as a stop against withdrawal - the reverse motion frees it.
Why are these made in 316 stainless?
Quick-release pins tend to live outdoors or in washdown areas, exposed and frequently handled. 316 keeps the pivot and spring action free of corrosion so the mechanism keeps working.
What sizes are available?
Regular production covers 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm diameters in lengths from 20mm to 120mm; other sizes are made against requirement - send us your requirement.
Drop nose pin or linch pin?
Both give tool-free retention. The linch pin's keep ring sits at the head end and suits hitch duties; the drop nose pin locks at the tip, holds captive through the assembly, and its 316 construction suits corrosive environments.
