Shaft Locking Pins
Shaft locking pins are quick-release retaining pins in the linch pin family, with a sprung wire keep that wraps around the shaft rather than flipping over its end - a more secure hold for assemblies that see vibration and rough handling. We supply them in mild steel, with case hardening available, across a range of sizes from 6.3mm to 12mm diameter.
Also known as: shaft locking pin, locking pin, quick release shaft pin, spring lock pin, wire keep pin.
Shaft locking pin dimensions
| Pin diameter | Length |
|---|---|
| 6.3mm | 50mm |
| 8mm | 57mm |
| 10mm | 57mm |
| 11mm | 90mm |
| 12mm | 50mm |
Materials & strength
Wrap-around keep
The sprung wire bears around the shaft circumference rather than resting over its end, so the fitted pin resists being bounced or snagged loose - the reason the pattern is picked where security of assembly matters.
Load carrying
The solid pin body carries transverse shear and bending loads. The keeper or locking feature prevents axial withdrawal of the pin from the joint.
Case hardening option
Pins can be case hardened and tempered for wear resistance in gritty or high-cycle applications.
Related specificationsHow does a shaft locking pin differ from a linch pin?
Both are solid quick-release pins with sprung keeps. The linch pin's ring flips over the shaft end; the shaft locking pin's wire wraps the shaft itself, giving a more positive lock where vibration or knocks could lift a conventional keep.
What sizes are made?
The regular range runs from 6.3mm to 12mm diameter in the lengths shown in the table; the range is reviewed as new applications arise, so send us your requirement if a size is not listed.
When is case hardening worth specifying?
Where the pin works in abrasive conditions or is cycled constantly - hardening the surface resists wear at the contact points while the core stays tough.
