DIN 7976 Hex Head Self-Tapping Screws (Type AB)
DIN 7976 Type AB · Hex head self-tapping screw

We supply DIN 7976 hexagon head self-tapping screws with the Type AB spaced thread and sharp point, in steel zinc plated and A2 stainless steel, from gauge 2 (2.2mm) to gauge 14 (6.3mm). The hex head takes a socket or spanner drive - useful where higher driving effort or repeated assembly is involved.

Also known as: hex self tapper, hexagon head self tapping screw, hex head sheet metal screw, indented hex self tapper, din7976, DIN 7976 C.

Materials & strength

Hex head

Driven with a socket, nut runner or spanner rather than a recess bit - suits powered driving and awkward access.

Type AB thread and point

Spaced self-tapping thread with a sharp point that forms its own thread in sheet metal, plastics and pre-punched holes.

Steel zinc plated

Zinc plated (BZP) finish as standard for general indoor fixings.

Stainless steel A2

Good general corrosion resistance for indoor and external use.

Frequently asked

Why choose a hex head self-tapper over a pozi pan?

The external hex takes a socket or spanner, which resists cam-out under higher driving effort and suits repeated powered assembly. Where a low-profile head or recess drive is preferred, DIN 7981 pozi pan is the usual alternative.

What does Type AB mean?

Type AB is the spaced self-tapping thread with a sharp gimlet point - DIN point form C, so these screws are often listed as DIN 7976 C.

How do the gauge sizes convert to metric diameters?

The gauges in the dimension table correspond to these diameters: 2g = 2.2mm, 4g = 2.9mm, 6g = 3.5mm, 7g = 3.9mm, 8g = 4.2mm, 10g = 4.8mm, 12g = 5.5mm and 14g = 6.3mm.

What is the difference between DIN 7976 and a self-drilling hex screw?

DIN 7976 taps its own thread but needs a pre-drilled or punched hole; a self-drilling screw such as DIN 7504 K has a drill point that cuts its own hole in steel first. Send us your requirement if you are unsure which suits the application.
