Positive mechanical locking
The split pin provides a physical lock rather than relying on friction, which is why the pattern is long established on vehicle axles and pinned joints.
Steel grade 4 & stainless A2/A4
Grade 4 steel suits general pinned assemblies; A2 and A4 stainless cover corrosive environments, with A4 preferred for chloride or marine exposure.
What is a castle nut used for?
Castle and slotted nuts are used where the nut must be positively retained, classically on axles, clevis pins and control linkages. A split pin passes through the slots and a cross-drilled hole in the bolt or pin, physically stopping the nut from rotating.
What is the difference between a slotted nut and a castle nut?
Both lock the same way; the castle pattern has a raised, turret-like slotted crown, while the slotted pattern has the slots cut directly into the hexagon body. In this DIN 935 range the slotted form covers sizes up to and including M10, with the castle form from M12 upward.
How is the split pin fitted?
The nut is run down so that a pair of slots lines up with the cross-hole in the bolt, then the split pin is passed through and its legs are opened to secure it. The pin acts as a physical stop rather than relying on friction.
What materials are DIN 935 nuts available in?
DIN 935 castle and slotted nuts are available in steel grade 4 and stainless steel A2 and A4 across a wide range of metric sizes. Stainless suits damp or corrosive conditions where a plated steel nut is not appropriate.
