DIN 471 External Circlips
DIN 471 · External circlip

DIN 471 covers external circlips — sprung retaining rings that seat in a groove on a shaft to locate bearings and components axially. We supply external circlips for a wide range of shaft diameters.

Also known as: external retaining rings, shaft circlips, snap rings.

Axial retention

Seated in its groove, the clip shoulders the load of bearings and components along the shaft axis.

Frequently asked

What is a DIN 471 circlip?

An external retaining ring fitted into a machined groove on a shaft. Once sprung into the groove its protruding face forms a shoulder that locates bearings, gears and spacers axially.

How are external circlips fitted?

With circlip pliers engaging the lug holes: the clip is expanded just enough to pass over the shaft and released into the groove. Overspreading distorts the ring and reduces its grip.
