What is a channel nut?

A channel nut is shaped to fit inside strut channel (metal framing channel), providing a threaded point for fixing brackets and fittings anywhere along the channel. Most patterns drop in through the slot and quarter-turn to lock across the channel lips; designs vary.

What are zebs or zebedees?

Trade nicknames for channel nuts - the same product is also called a strut nut or top nut depending on the supplier and industry, while 'spring nut' usually names the sprung variant specifically. All of these describe nuts that lock into strut channel.

How does a channel nut stay in place?

On most patterns the nut's grooved ends engage the inturned lips of the channel when it is turned, and tightening the fixing pulls it hard against the lips; designs vary. Spring-loaded types hold themselves in position in the channel while the fitting is offered up, which makes overhead assembly easier.

Which channel nut type do I need?

Plain channel nuts are the general-purpose pattern. The sprung types hold their own position in the channel while the fixing is made: short spring for shallow channels, long spring for deeper channels, and the topnut coil spring pattern fits both 41mm x 41mm and 41mm x 21mm channel. The stud nut pattern carries an integral stud for bolting equipment to the channel.

What sizes and materials are channel nuts available in?

Plain channel nuts are available M4 to M16; the sprung and stud patterns cover M4 to M12. All variants are available in stainless steel, hot dip galvanised and zinc plated (BZP).
